HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN AFRICAN-AMERICAN
ALUMNI ASSOCIATION AND MADISON MEDICUS

1991 marked the twenty-fourth year since the first African-American student graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School, as a four year program. The contributions and struggles of the African-American graduates of our distinguished alma mater are numerous. Those of us who have matriculated feel a special commitment to the University of Wisconsin and the people of the great state of Wisconsin.

In 1982, Madison Medicus was established by then medical student Ronald V. Myers, Sr., because of diminishing support and initial medical school administration steps to abolish the medical school Health Sciences Opportunities Program under the direction of then Assistant Dean Dr. Leroy Brown. The program was strongly supported by then Vice-Chancellor of Health Sciences, George Lythcott, M.D.

Our first reunion was celebrated under the leadership of Ada M. Fisher, M.D., the first African-American female graduate of the University of Wisconsin Medical School. The late Walter J. Tardy, M.D., the first African-American graduate of the University of Wisconsin Medical School, as a four year program, in 1967, was the special guest speaker. The historic first black graduate from the University of Wisconsin Medical School as a two year program was Dr. John W. Lawlah, who became Dean of the Howard University Medical School. This was the first historic reunion of African-American alumni to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Myers, still as a medical student, went on to establish the African-American Alumni Association under the leadership of Kwame Salter, former Director of the Afro-American Student Center. Dr. Myers also established the University of Wisconsin-Madison Campus Chapter of the N.A.A.C.P.

In 1984, the African-American Alumni Association had its first campus wide reunion activity, under the leadership of founding President Kwame S. Salter, through a reunion banquet. The Rev., Dr. Joseph Lowery, then President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (S.C.L.C.), was the guest speaker. Reception entertainment was provided by noted University of Wisconsin Experimental Improvisation Black Music Ensemble performer, under the Direction of Professor Jimmy Cheatham, accomplished jazz pianist Ron Myers.

In 1990, the first African-American Alumni Association Homecoming Weekend activity was held, October 26-28, 1990. There has been a number of African-American Alumni Association Homecoming Weekend activities since 1990.

In 1991, Madison Medicus, representing the African-American medical school alumni of the University of Wisconsin African-American Alumni Association, in association with the Wisconsin Medical Alumni Association, which has many African-American medical alumni members, who are represented by Madison Medicus, hosted the second African-American medical alumni reunion under the leadership of Rev. Ronald V. Myers, Sr., M.D., Founder of Madison Medicus and the University of Wisconsin African-American Alumni Association.

It is important that African-American alumni become more involved with the University of Wisconsin's efforts to foster improved minority student enrollment, retention and graduation. As medical school African-American Alumni, our medical practice and life experiences have often been different from those for which we were trained. Our commitment to the discipline and practice of medicine is reflected by our preparation at the University of Wisconsin Medical school where excellence was stressed.

It is important that our input be allowed and recommendations be appreciated because they are based upon first hand knowledge and experience as African-American medical professionals and alumni. It is imperative that the medical school and university community understand that we exist and are concerned not only about minority medical school and campus education, but about the University of Wisconsin itself, in all aspects.
